Domain Names
Your domain name can be the single most important decision, while being the least expensive investment, that you make in your web site. A domain name is “something.com” or “someother.ca”. The “.com” or “.net” or “.ca” and other endings to web sites are called “top level domains.” So you need to decide, not just on a domain name, but also what top level domain you will use.
Often this choice is already made for you. In most cases, you’ll try to get your name in .com but often that will be taken. So you try for .net. In Canada, you might want .ca if the .com is not available.
You want your domain name to be as short as possible, and easy to type and remember. If your domain name is Xx8kJjr9.com (to pick a ludicrous example) that’s going to be harder for your customers to remember and type than simply companyname.com. If your .com and .net and .ca are taken, you are left with the option of .biz, which I don’t recommend due to its not yet being taken that seriously. And unless you are offering something for nothing, don’t bother with .org because that’s supposed to be reserved for non-profit organizations.
