the HP nx6110 laptop also has faulty mobo construction – the southbridge chip detaches from the mobo – this is caused by the fact it is a BGA mounted chip (using solder as “glue”) on a chassis that is not rigid and experiences inordinate flex – bad bad engineering – proximity of the chip to high heat sources softens the solder and the chassis flex pops the chip from the motherboard – this manifests in intermittent to permanent failure of the USB ports – it is easy to confirm that this is the source of failure simply by pressing firmly on the keyboard bezel just to the left and near the top of the touchpad to force the chip to make contact with the mobo so the USB ports function

the DV experiences exactly the same engineering problems but the chip affected unfortunately controls the video and not the USB which is more catastrophic – at least with the USB chip it is possible to see the failure with a “running” machine

the two common bad engineering problems are:
1. poorly mounted motherboards on non-rigid chassis with too much flex
2. using solder as “glue” (BGA mounted chips)

I suspect HP is well aware of the systemic hardware failure and the lucrative fault intolerant profits of premature failure, due to this bad engineering, throughout their product lines.

HP’s quality and reliability which has been exemplary from my experience’s in the decades from the late 70′s 80′s and 90′s is now no longer – in fact in the last half of first decade of the new millennium (the late 2000′s) now exemplifies the worst in the industry

The fact that HP is now even less concerned with even a modicum of any quality of engineering effort is the blatant instructions to press the PG DOWN key on the HP Mini 110-3018CA model netbook. There are NO cursor control keys on keyboard. The problem is seen by going to the BIOS and pressing the F1 for further help instructions on how to navigate and use the BIOS settings. Only the first screen can be seen with the instruction to press the PG DOWN key for more help!

This same missing key problem is found on an HP Compaq netbook (the model is a CPQ 410 or 300 something)

Amputating the cursor paging control keys with their modifiers CTRL SHIFT and ALT from the keyboard is a severely crippling engineering design flaw. It is extremely patronizing for HP to foist such shoddy poor products on an unsuspecting market. From hidden engineering flaws to patently obvious ones now. And what really galls is that it is so obvious HP does not even care about basic functionality irregardless of quality. Remember the floating point Pentium chip flaw?

Never in my wildest dreams would it ever occur to me that HP could degenerate to such a deplorable state. From the epitome of electronic engineering excellence exemplifying the esteemed eminence of its exalted position in industry for many decades to this in a few short years. This is what makes HP all the more despicable – it’s one thing to start off mediocre and then degenerate but to have been such a qualified industry leader and to stoop so low …

Long story short after writing to president of HP canada around christmas and warning of intent to join class action laptop fixed with new moboard this week at no cost in 48 hours!!!
So if you havent written to Paul Tsaparis yet might be worth a try.)

I purchased a HP dv6-1124ca on July 17, 2010. The motherboard went bad after a short time frame, and was replaced. The replacement motherboard went bad approximately two months ago. It is now sitting here un-useable. The store where it was repaired wants to charge over $400 for another board. HP tells me that the warranty has expired. Two bad boards in a little over a year is rediculous. Sign me up for that class action law suit.

Hp, I won’t purchase an HP computer again, and who ever else I can recommend not to…

An update,
We’re grinding along- put a used MB in the HP and it works great(for how long??) then lawyer Bruce wanted it for evidence along with the dead MB. We are collecting emails and names of people who are interested in the suit- you can email Bruce directly, but as I understand things there is no risk to anyone who joins the suit, this risk will be borne by the lawyer co. I know others with the same problem with the DV6000. Hewlett Packard are completely irresponsible. You should not expect to pay so much for something which lasts less than 5 years. They will be the losers in the long run.
